I selected Birch plugs as they were about the closest match for a fir and pine cabinet. They took a Minwax Ebony stain quite well. I used the plugs to mimic clavos nail heads. The only minor issue was a few would split upon dry fitting into slightly undersized screw head countersinks. This is just the nature of small plugs, so I got a few extras.
