Pegas 30" Scroll Saw

There’s a reason everyone recommends Bearwood’s Pegas scroll saw. After having completed my first project on my new Pegas I can whole heartedly agree that this machine is one you won’t regret purchasing.

I had to make several adjustments and partially reassemble to the saw to get it to work properly but now it is working well. Very disappointed with Bear Woods though. They said they HAD to ship UPS Express and charged me the Express rate ($411) but then shipped the saw UPS Ground (~$200). They did give me a small break on shipping and reduced it by $40. When I asked about the shipping issue they said their customer service rep "made a mistake" and that they charged me the correct shipping cost. Which I know is untrue because I had a third party lined up to ship it for me at the UPS Ground rate. I decided to go with their shipping because it was Express and they gave me a small break on the cost. I thought it was worth it to not have to go through the extra step of setting up a pickup at their location and it would arrive faster. Their site says the don't charge shipping fees above what they pay. But in my case they charged me nearly double the true shipping cost.

I upgraded to the 30" Pegas from a Type 1 DeWalt that I had loved for many years. Out of the box the saw is setup well and needed no adjustments. The table distance in front of the blade is about half of my old saw and took a couple of hours to get used to less support. The Pegas cuts a little slower than expected but it does a fine job. Above 75-80% speed there is a significant vibration I have yet to find even when bolted to a very heavy table. The table coating is already scratched after four-ish hours of use, minor disappointment from advetising.The pegas quick connect blade tensioner is a interesting and useful way to get consistent tension over others. The two inch dust connection below the table is effective but really puts a strain on a shop vac with such a small opening. I added an upper dust collection are using Loc Line attached to the upper arm as with my previous saws for 99.9% dust removal. An upper dust collection system should be added from the manufacturer.

The Pegas 30" scroll saw is my 3rd. one. Stepping up each time as I gained experience. I don't see myself ever needing a step up from this one. Smoothest running saw I have ever encountered. I bought the Pegas stand built for the saw. Heavy, sturdy and mostly follow the assy. instructions. Every piece fits perfectly as long they are connected exactly as directed.Need help? The Pegas scroll saw arrived in great condition, albeit with a broken installed blade. The saw is quiet with minimal vibration and performs perfectly. I had to adjust the table to centre the blade which thanks to the 4 hex key screws on the table is a fairly simple quick task. The Dewalt can handle a full 2" piece of stock whereas the Pegas is limited to 1 3/4" stock. Love the dust control built in the saw - works great. One of the best features is that the table remains flat while the head tilts making it easier to control the workpiece. The air blower has a good volume of airflow to keep the lines visible on the pattern. I use a foot pedal to keep my hands & eyes on the work making the scroll saw a very safe tool to operate.
