Pegas Chuck Heads - Saw Compatibility and Regular vs DW Chucks

Pegas Chuck Heads - Saw Compatibility and Regular vs DW Chucks

Also known as blade clamps, we get a LOT of chuck head questions, and out of all of them, there are two asked more than any others.

  1. Will a Pegas Chuck head work for my saw?
  2. Do I need the regular Pegas chuck with a tension lever (SS-PEGAS-CHUCK) or the DeWalt and Delta chuck without a tension lever (SS-DWPEGAS-CHUCK).

And an honorable mention for a third top question:

Yes, the chuck heads come as a set of the top and bottom clamps with the thumb screws and all bolts / pieces necessary to install your chuck head.

Question 1: Will a Pegas Chuck head work for my saw?

Answer: Depends on what saw you have.

The Pegas chuck heads are compatible with a lot of saw models, but not every saw model. The below list is a list of saws we know FOR SURE work with the Pegas chucks. That said, the list is not exhaustive and we are certain there are saws out there we have not tried a chuck head on that would be compatible; we just don't want to advertise any we have not tested. Where we have compatibility success is with saws that have Excalibur-type heads. For reference, look at the Excalibur, Pegas, or DeWalt 788 saws as good examples of compatible saws.

Question 2: Tension lever or no tension lever?

Answer: You kinda get to pick. Let us explain.

The DeWalt 788 and Delta 690 scroll saws have tension levers built into the saws. That is why the DW Pegas chuck is made, to replace your clamps without adding another tension lever. For some people, these tension levers work very well for them.

That said, the tensions levers are one of the most failure-prone parts of the DeWalt and Delta saws. We have noticed a pattern over the past nearly ten years of selling these chuck heads that a lot of DeWalt and Delta saws experience tension lever failure. With the regular Pegas chuck, you can easily 'replace' the tension lever with the one on the chuck head or give yourself another tension lever option.

With the DeWalt 788 and Delta 690, either chuck head can be used. Whether you pick the tension lever or no tension lever option, both will be compatible with your saws.

For all other saws, choose the regular Pegas chuck WITH a tension lever, and for JET saws choose the Jet chuck.
